Dago Red will continue her bid for another unlimited championship at Reno this year. Under owner Terry Bland, the racer has won three consecutive titles, first with Bruce Lockwood and then with current pilot Skip Holm. We might even see an official 500 mph lap out of her this year. |
Although Voodoo is showing up this year with a semi-racing engine, she won't have a big chance to win the gold come Sunday. The extensive airframe mods will allow the racer to go pretty quick, so look for a great silver race. |
Reno rookie Brian Adams brings his immaculate P-51D Mustang to Reno for his first race. This aircraft is, visually at least, one of the nicest Mustangs you'll see. Best of luck to Adams around the pylons! |
In this corner... The Unlimited contender with the red and white Mustang..! Tiger returns with Strega for his last year of racing. Equipped with a Sparrow Merlin, Strega will be among the top contenders in the gold class. |
Jimmy Leeward has seen more pylons than most people have seen trees... From Florida to Mojave to Reno and Phoenix, Leeward has flown his Mustangs in all three unlimited fields. Look for some low and tight flying! |
Tom Dwelle and his crew have bid their time. They've worked hard, improved their aircraft and operation. They have a highly strung R-3350 for the horsepower. It might be Critical Mass' year. |
Look out! Hisey and the Miss A team are showing up this year with an improved racer and some extra ponies under the cowl. Brent wants a first place trophy, and this year might be all his in the silver class - if he doesn't bump up to the gold! |
There is no replacement for displacement! Bolt a R-4360 onto a Sea Fury and go racing... Art Vance will drive the huge racer around the course this year, and he's ready to put the throttle to it. Look for a gold race finish on Sunday. |
Joe Thibodeau returns to Reno in his R-3350 powered Sea Fury. He's flown the pylons before in a P-51D, so now he'll do it all again in the Sea Fury. A strong bronze racer with the ability to bump into the silver class. |
This truly is a Smokin' "Stocker." It looks pretty tame for a Mustang... No racing canopy, no racing scoop... But this team is about horsepower - as in Dwight Thorne horsepower. Look for speeds in the 430 mph neighborhood. |
Tom Camp can be counted on for great bronze level competition in his R-2000 powered Yak. Even though the aircraft is highly modified, it isn't really a go-fast racer. But that isn't everything - this is a fun racer and it's great to see Camp at Reno. |
Sean Carroll is bringing his "racing" Yak to Reno as a rookie. A former Air Force fighter pilot, Carroll is looking forward to strutting his stuff during the races. The aircraft is an unknown, so it will be exciting to see how they both perform. |
Dan Vance was going to race at Reno in 2001, but his rookie year had to be put off to now with last years' cancellation. Look for Dan to race against his father, Art Vance, in Saturday's bronze race - a first for the unlimited class. |
Talk about a wildcard! Rookie Ron Buccarelli brings back a classic Griffon powered Mustang to do battle around the pylons. We hope Ron has a safe and fast experience at Reno this year! Go Ron! (Hello, Tess!!!) |
Sparky is a completely stock P-51D, but what makes her special is that she has a combat record. She'll compete in the bronze class and |
Rhino bows out of unlimited racing this year with his two racers - the hopped-up Risky B Mustang, and his Hawker Sea Fury. Look for Rhino to pull out some stops to pull off a win this year. |
Bagley bought Bob Hoover's Mustang and kept her painted just like Hoover had her. Now he rounds the pylons in the bronze class in the former start/pace aircraft. |
Enns brings his relatively stock Mustang back to Reno. Another bronze class racer, the Mustang should show us some speeds up around 350 - 370 mph. |
Will she make it? Will she be just coming together? Will she run away with the whole enchilada? Time will tell... But if the hard working crew can get the Beast together, Penney will push her just as much as he can in order to win. Best of Luck! |
Another fun, bronze class racer is Bond's immaculate TF-51D Mustang. The fully dual-control Mustang has been a fixture at Reno for several years now, and should have a good view of the pack during the bronze races. No slight...! Pilot Patterson treats Bond's racer like a princess. |
Moore's Czech Mate should be a rather strong gold contender this year. Pilot Smoot reports they have the best R-2800 engine in the aircraft that they've ever had. A larger tail gives the Yak better handling, but it's still twitchy on the course. |
Keenum brings his R-3350 powered Fury back to Reno. In 2001, pilot Hoot Gibson suffered a mayday landing after the induction scoop failed during a race. |
Sean Carroll's "airshow" Yak will be flown and raced by Dave Morss. There might be a few tricks with this Russian racer, so watching her will be exciting during the races. |
Dawson brings the R-3350 Sea Fury back to Reno. The Southwest Airlines pilot will be a very strong silver with speeds near 400 mph. |
The ever-present Sanders family will be racing their R-3350 powered Sea Fury at Reno this year. The R-4360 powered Dreadnought is out this year with an unfinished engine. |
Rhino also races his R-3350 Sea Fury named Bad Attitude. The racer falls into a speed class between the bronze and silver classes. |
Two words: HARD CHARGER. You heard that here first... The tweaked up Sea Fury will be capable of kicking some serious rump in the gold class. Mike is going to wick it up this year. |
Brown's other Sea Fury, the two seat September Pops also sports some go fast modes in terms of the engine, propeller and some aerodynamic work. Pilot Randy Bailey will be polishing the pylons with speeds just above 400 mph. |
